Japan-based Nissan Motor Corp. will cut 9,000 jobs and 20 percent of its global manufacturing capacity, the automaker announced Thursday. It is unclear how the cuts will affect Nissan’s U.S. headquarters (Nissan North America Inc.) in Cool Springs or its manufacturing facility in Smyrna.

Nissan, which has its U.S. headquarters in Franklin, announced the company will be cutting 9,000 jobs following a challenging year. Officials have not announced if the Smyrna plant will be affected.

Nissan’s struggles to cope with tougher car industry conditions and address internal weaknesses have spiraled, leaving the automaker no choice but to slash payroll, production and its forecasts.

Nissan reported Thursday a loss for the latest fiscal quarter as its vehicle sales sank while costs and inventory ballooned, prompting the Japanese automaker to slash 9,000 jobs.

Nissan President and CEO Makoto Uchida volunteered to immediately begin forfeiting half of his monthly compensation, and other executive committee members also volunteered to take pay cuts.

The Japanese automaker is making deep cuts to navigate a steep decline in global sales, with layoffs, reduced production, and a renewed focus on EVs and hybrids.
